if not for him

Psalm 124

If the LORD had not been on our side
- let Israel say -
if the LORD had not been on our side
when men attacked us,
when their anger flared against us,

they would have swallowed us alive;
the flood would have engulfed us,

the torrent would have swept over us,
the raging waters would have swept us away.

Praise be to the LORD,
who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare;

the snare has been broken,
and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

Just a brief thought today, not a proper study...cast my eye over this psalm and pondered for a moment on what God has done for me. Then I thought of what God has done for me that I don't know about. How many things have been different because of God - and yet I don't realise this? How much has he prevented, held back, allowed or caused that I do not see or attribute to him?

So this morning I thanked God for all those things. Things that would have been different if not for him, even if I don't see them on this somewhat scruffier side of the tapestry...
